Historic Churches Commitee

English Heritage

English Heritage is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, we are an executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Our principal powers and responsibilities are set out in the National Heritage Act (1983). The English Heritage website is available here.

Although the Diocese of Hallam Historic Churches Committee is the body that considers proposals that will affect the special historic or architectural character of Catholic churches and chapels in the Diocese, any proposals should be developed carefully in accordance with the English Heritage guidance contained in 'Conservation Principles: Policy and Guidance for the sustainable management of the historic environment'. This guidance document can be downloaded here.
